The Financial Times

"Blackboards hanging from the walls chalk up the bar snacks and menu. Three dishes never change: a house salad, a whole lemon sole and a fillet of beef with foie gras. From the other blackboards, we enjoyed snails on toast, a fillet of stone bass, a Barnsley lamb chop and absolutely correct versions of crème caramel and a pear and almond tart. But it is the wine that gives this place its sparkle. The policy is to buy no more than 10 cases of any wine – to maintain customer interest and to make their suppliers work harder..."

The Independent

"A cover charge of £1.50 a head covers good baguette and olives, but we pimp them with some pungent roasted garlic and slices of saucisson sec (£3 each from the frugal bar menu) before our meal...The chef, Juliette Shallow, late of Coq d'Argent in the City, can certainly cook with confidence, because the fish and the main meat dishes are perfectly judged. I applaud new ventures and love the concept, the location and the unadorned décor."

The Evening Standard

The wine list was indeed alluring, beginning at £4 a 125ml glass (a Sauvignon de Touraine and a Biferno Rosso Riserva from Molise) and never going out of reach (a glass of really tremendous Château Filhot Sauternes 2001 was £10)...honest, unostentatious and a good place to meet in Covent Garden - and there's a private dining room downstairs for which there is no extra charge....It's affordable, too.
